March 9, 2010. Fifteen inches of new snow yesterday and more to come tomorrow. The Santa Fe Ski Basin now has more than a 120 inch base and all runs and areas are open. The skiing is excellent, and the traffic heading up the mountain would indicate that the skiers are happy. It is a wonderful time to be in Santa Fe.

Aug 22, History of Santa Fe Fiesta

Santa Fe Fiesta was established by proclamation in 1710. It has been an annual event since that date. It was established to commemorate Don Diego de Vargas's bloodless reconquest of the city in 1692.

The burning of Zozobra and dispelling your cares has its origins in the 1920s.

The Children's Pet Parade is of more recent origin.

The wooden virgin, a reminder of De Vargas's belief that the Madonna's intercession secured his victory. The wooden virgin is one of the most venerated in the world. The gold crown is laden with gems among which is a three-caret diamond. She is carried in the Procession with La Conquestadora.

The Historical-Hysterical Parade was established 88 years ago.

Information taken from the Santa Fean magazine.

May 18, Archaeology in Santa Fe, New Mexico

When the Sweeney Convention Center was demolished for construction of a new facility, archaeological studies began. After more than a year and $2.2 million dollars the studies are complete and the new center is scheduled to be completed during the summer of 2008. More than 625,000 artifacts spanning eight centuries were recovered. The timeline begins with pre-Columbian Tewa and the discovery of burials, pit houses and a kiva. A hacienda occupied the location during Spanish Colonial times leaving artifacts of pottery and related items from Mexico, Spain and the Philippines. In 1846 the U.S. Army occupied Santa Fe and Fort Macy was established. Calvary barracks were built on the site, and from the artifacts it can be said that it was a fairly plush outpost for officers and families. In addition to a horde of whiskey bottles there were photographs, fine dolls, porcelain saltshakers, and other imported items. It will take some time to organize and analyze the collection.
