Ristra

Ristra

A ristra is a series of bright red chile peppers tied along a string. It is usually hung on a portal (porch), and the peppers will gradually turn a dark maroon over time. This originated as a way of having the chiles available while cooking. The cook would remove the number required for a dish and they were gradually used up. However, the bright color makes a very decorative hanging, and now this is the primary use. The strings are sometimes connected in a circle.
