Remembrance

Remembrance of the past is crucial to maintaining a culture. Whether written or oral the history, religion, and social structure must be passed on to each generation if the culture is to continue. With television, newspapers, travel, and public schools it is difficult for people to maintain their native tongue when it differs from that of the general population. Recently, the Dakota Sioux have instituted scrabble contests as a way to encourage their people to learn the language. The religion of most Native American tribes is transmitted by oral traditions.

Remembrance is my attempt to portray the passing on of tribal lore. The landscape represents the past history of the tribe, and an elder is communicating his remembrances to a youth.
