Fertility has a powerful colored image in the center which immediately draws your focus. Then you notice the background is a sky in which the egg is floating. This is reminiscent of Magritte; however, the clouds are not in as sharp a contrast. Upon closer inspection of the egg you notice that there are many birds crowded into the one shell. How many are there? The egg represents a beginning or an origin. The contents represent replenishment or continuation. Why multiple birds in a shell. Today with the use of fertility drugs in our society it is not unusual to have multiple births. The painting is meant to be pleasing to the eye, require more than a passing glance to comprehend the image, and to provide a whimsical interlude.
